Volunteer youths in the Um Dukhun locality in Sudan’s Central Darfur State have established an emergency room to assist the vulnerable segment of the community, an official said.
Ahmed Al-Silay, the coordinator and follow-up officer of the new emergency room, revealed that the new emergency room comprises five committees; Coordination and Programs Follow-up Committee, Finance Committee, Women’s Committee, Media Committee, and the Secretariat.
He noted that the formation of these committees was marked by enthusiasm and transparency from those passionate about voluntary work in the locality. He said the emergency room will benefit the poor, needy, and displaced persons who have fled to the locality due to the ongoing war that has ravaged the country for over a year.
During this period, governmental institutions have been absent, and humanitarian aid from organizations has dwindled, exacerbating the suffering of the populace.
“The humanitarian conditions in the region necessitate the formation of this emergency room by volunteers dedicated to community service. The youth aim to involve benevolent members of the local community and humanitarian organizations to provide food, clothing, and medical care,” Al-Silay explained, “The emergency room aims to assist those affected, including the displaced and refugees who have sought refuge in Um Dukhun during this war, as well as supporting the poor and modest families. Additionally, it seeks to enhance health aspects in collaboration with benefactors and humanitarian organizations, addressing the acute shortage of medicines and promoting health awareness on issues related to women’s health including female genital mutilation, early marriage, and violence against women through educational workshops.”
He added: “There is also a focus on the physically disabled, blind, and all individuals with special needs.”
Al-Silay urged all benefactors to support the emergency room to assist the community of Um Dukhun during the rainy season by providing essential shelter materials.
“Plans were underway to conduct a precise survey of the displaced, refugees, and needy individuals in the locality, situated along the border with Chad and the Central African Republic, to alleviate the living conditions of the citizens,” he stated.
An activist, Ayman Younis, confirmed that the emergency room is up and running and is ready to engage in all programs aimed at serving the residents of the locality, especially the vulnerable.
“The emergency room in Um Dukhun locality also aspires to foster values of community solidarity, cooperation, and altruism among the locality’s residents to create better living conditions,” he said. “It calls on all civil society benefactors and humanitarian organizations to support the room in its mission to aid those in need.”
